Cambridge IGCSE Foreign Languages (German) is designed to develop an ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication. The course is based on the linked language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing, and these are built on as learner’s progress through their studies. The syllabus also aims to offer insights into the culture and civilisation of countries where German is spoken, thus encouraging positive attitudes towards language learning and towards speakers of foreign languages. This syllabus aims to foster pupils ‘curiosity and to deepen their understanding of the world. It enables them to express their ideas and thoughts in the foreign language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. This course builds on the foundation of language learning laid at keystage 3.
The syllabus content is organised around five broad topic areas which provide contexts for the acquisition of vocabulary and the study of grammar and structures.
Through the study of these Topic areas, candidates gain insight into target language countries and communities.

• The international world.

Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
Understand and respond to spoken language
Understand and respond to written language
Communicate in speech, showing knowledge of a range and variety of vocabulary, and applying the grammar and structures of the target language accurately
Communicate in writing, showing knowledge of a range and variety of vocabulary, and applying the grammar and structures of the target language accurately.
Candidates are awarded grades A* to G.
All candidates must sit for four components.
All candidates must take:
Paper 1 - Listening
Candidates listen to a number of recordings and answer questions testing comprehension. This paper lasts 45 minutes and is worth 25% of the final grade.
Paper 2 – Reading
Candidates read a number of texts and answer questions testing comprehension. This paper lasts 1 hour and is worth 25% of the final grade.
Paper 3 – Speaking
Candidates complete two role plays, a topic presentation/conversation and a general conversation. This paper lasts 15 minutes and is worth 25% of the final grade.
Paper 4 – Writing
Candidates respond in the target language to three tasks. This paper lasts 1 hour and is worth 25% of the final grade.
