Summer is upon us and the summer holidays are ahead of us. Although welcomed by many the long break also has its issues. Parents still working find it difficult to look after their children, costs rise as the children need to be entertained, long days and short nights affect sleep patterns and a lack of routine means children start to lose their learning.
Research around the world shows different effects but in general there is a loss of learning and mainly in math. Reading tends to be held up but maths in almost all studies shows a decline in knowledge.
The advice is simply to ensure the children do at least some learning each day, maybe 20 minutes is sufficient.
There are multiple apps online to use, https://www.drfrost.org/ is a great free resource to use. https://senecalearning.com/en-GB/ is a UK based program which supports GCSE work so good for all but great for the higher grades.
So as we approach the long holiday don’t forget that the students will also lose some learning, a few minutes a day can make a difference, and they wont be so bored.
