Curriculum Overview

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Sciences gives students the opportunity to study biology, chemistry and physics, each covered in separate syllabus sections. Students learn about the basic principles of each subject through a mix of theoretical and practical studies, while also developing an understanding of the scientific skills essential for further study.

  • Organic chemistry

  • Matter and thermal properties

  • Transfer of thermal energy

  • Waves

  • Light

  • Electromagnetic spectrum

  • Sound

  • Electricity

  • Electric circuits

Assessment and Coursework

Candidates are awarded grades A* to G.

​

Candidates expected to achieve grades D, E, F or G study the core syllabus (Paper 2) content only and are eligible for grades C to G.

Candidates expected to achieve grades C or higher should study the core and extended (Paper 3) syllabus content.

All candidates must sit for three papers.

Examinations

All candidates must take:

Paper 1

This is a multiple choice paper consisting of 40 items of the four-choice type.  This paper lasts 45 minutes and is worth 30% of the final grade.

 

And either:

 

Paper 2 – Core curriculum (Grades C to G available)

This core theory paper consists of short answer and structured questions, based on the core curriculum.  This paper lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and is worth 50% of the final grade.

 

Or

 

Paper 3 – Extended curriculum (Grades A* to G available)

This extended theory papers consisting of short answer and structured questions.  The questions will be based on all of the material from the core and supplement.  Questions will allow candidates across the full ability range to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.  This paper lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and is worth 50% of the final grade.

 

All candidates must take:

 

Paper 6

All candidates must then complete paper 6 which is an alternative to the practical examination.  This paper lasts 1 hour and is worth 20% pf the final grade
